Tracking-Trailing - Dogs trained in tracking and trailing are capable of following human odor over great distances. We train our dogs in scent discrimination so that he follows only one individual’s odor at a time. We train on various surfaces such as grass, asphalt, sand, dirt, concrete and gravel. This is known as variable surface tracking/trailing or VST. We train in a variety of locations both rural and urban. Tracking/Trailing dogs are valuable in locating missing children, alzheimers patients, hunters and other missing people. Tracking dogs follow the actual footprints of the subject while trailing dogs can be feet away from the footprints.
TYPES OF SEARCH AND RESCUE DOG
Search dogs are trained to find missing people. They can be trained to find live people (air-scent, tracking and trailing) or deceased people (human remains detection (cadaver/HRD). It takes dedication, time money and support to train the SAR dog. In addition to training the dog the handler must learn many skills.
Air Scent- Are also called wilderness or area search dogs. These dogs are trained to search designated areas for missing people. These areas may consist of rugged terrain, heavy woods and other areas that are generally difficult for human searchers to navigate. We train these dogs in on and off-leash obedience as well as agility. Normally they work off-leash in a grid pattern searching for human scent. They may be trained to be scent specific.
Human Remains Detection-HRD (Cadaver) dogs are trained to locate human remains in various states of decomposition. They are trained to locate an entire body, body parts such as tissue, blood, teeth, bones, etc. We train in a variety of demanding environments in order to ensure the dogs reliability in the field. The dogs are trained to located above ground, buried and in water. We train our dogs to have a passive indication for example a sit, down or bark.
